_______________ THE SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF IDENTITY OF THE PEASANTS: UNIÓN EJIDAL TIERRA Y LIBERTAD, Y SAN JOSÉ ATOTONILCO. ABSTRACT: Farming has been studied in many ways, but peasant identity has not been a topic of interest, it has caused a lack of knowledge in this area. It is essential to recognize the peasant as object of study, and that they identify themselves from their own narratives or speeches. The purpose of this research was to determine how peasants socially construct their identity by using their own perspective. Nine peasant of “Unión Ejidal Tierra y Libertad” and “San José Atotonilco", belonging to municipality of Tlaxco, Tlaxcala, Mexico, were interviewed in depth and using life history approach. These interviews showed how peasants describe themselves from own speeches. The analysis was based on five axes: agricultural activity as a profession, peasant mode of operation, peasant family, village community and social structure. They are called identity features. These elements were integrators and took account of all peasant life aspects and were a comprehensive interpretation of how individuals identified as such. Results showed that the farmer look at himself as a professional because his works is a very specialized activity and his production all ows got financial and materials resources. The peasant family and the local community are social groups where the farmer interacts, and where laying the foundation for socialization. Peasant interacts in both groups and this two interactions leads to the peasant to be considered as a social class. | en_US |
